Between the capital of Vietnam and Sapa there are about 320 kms and several options to travel them. It is common to choose the train or bus, but you can also go by motorcycle if you like to go on your own: you know that it is a very common form of transport in Vietnam.
For both bus and train it is best to book online before: keep in mind that the route to Sapa is very frequented by tourists wanting to trek and that prices are inflated a bit. I provide a link to do so at the end of this post.
The cab to Sapa is of course expensive, since the more than 100 € and some for the route nobody will take them away. You will have a normal car or van, depending on how many people you are (obviously the van is worth it if you are a group of up to 9 people).
If you do not trust to buy the ticket online, which would be to some extent normal because the websites of Vietnam are not much, or you have any doubts about the schedules, ask directly for information at the station a day or two before leaving on the train to Sapa and buy the ticket there directly.
