NEW requirements for travel to the U.S. – July 2022

Indice

In accordance with ESTA regulations that became effective August 1, 2008, international travelers traveling to the United States must apply for travel authorization as soon as possible, but no less than 72 hours prior to departure of their international flight.

Due to changes in ESTA application processing, real-time approvals will no longer be available. Passengers who apply on the same day as their flight departure risk not having an ESTA approved prior to departure. International travelers without ESTA approval will not be able to board their flight to the United States.

The information is in the official languages of the 34 countries included in the U.S. list. These are the countries whose citizens do not need a visa to enter the U.S. for a stay of no more than 90 days.

Visiting Times Square, falling in love with the charms of the natural parks or touring the mythical Route 66 are just some of the charms that may lead you to visit the U.S. However, if you are going to ‘cross the pond’ you should know that to visit the United States you will need certain formalities and documentation, whatever the reason for your trip.

Do I need a visa, what does the ESTA application consist of, do I need to bring my passport? Resolving these questions is essential if you plan to travel to the U.S., among other things, because if you do not do so you may not comply with some of the requirements for travel and, consequently, you may be surprised to find yourself stranded on the ground.

Every trip requires prior preparation but when it comes to setting foot in the United States, the bureaucracy, paperwork and the succession of forms to complete all the documentation that is part of the requirements to travel to the country can be overwhelming.

With the proper information, successfully completing the process is not that complicated. In addition, there are certain issues that, while not mandatory requirements for travel to the United States, are highly recommended:

Since 2008, countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)have been required to apply for an ESTA online before flying or sailing to the United States. Passengers who have not registered for ESTA risk being denied a flight, although they can regularize their status at the airport for a possible additional fee. As of May 2, 2022, the I-94W form will be replaced by the ESTA electronic authorization.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is a process for determining the admissibility of visitors to the United States to determine whether they pose a risk to national security or law enforcement. The system checks law enforcement databases.

If you are granted ESTA, it establishes that you are eligible to travel, but does not establish that you are eligible to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. Upon arrival in the United States, you will be interviewed by a U.S. border protection officer at a port of entry, who can determine whether you are inadmissible under the Visa Waiver Program or for any reason provided under U.S. law.

At present, there are no countries that are required to take additional measures to those already mentioned. In the event that the epidemiological situation in a country/territory or zone worsens to an alarming degree, exceptional health control measures may be applied to passengers arriving from such countries/zones.
