What is a visa? A citizen of a foreign country seeking to enter the United States must generally first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport, a travel document issued by the country of which he or she is a citizen. Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel to the United States without a visa if they meet the requirements for visa-free travel. The visa section of this website discusses U.S. visas for foreign nationals traveling to the United States. Visit Travel.State.gov if you have additional questions. Note: U.S. citizens do not need a U.S. visa to travel, but when planning to travel abroad they may need a visa issued by the embassy of the country they wish to visit. Do you know what type of visa you need? For nonimmigrant visas, you can go directly to the DS-160 online application; or for immigrant visas, go directly to the USCIS website to find the appropriate forms. If you are unsure, use the “visa wizard” below to help you determine your visa type. View local information

Visas: According to the Immigration Control and Refugee Status Recognition Act, a foreign national wishing to enter Japan must, in principle, possess a valid passport issued by the government of his or her own country as well as a visa issued by the Government of Japan. The visa indicates that there is no a priori inconvenience for the foreign national to enter and stay in Japan. However, possession of a visa is only one of several requirements for entry into Japan and does not in itself guarantee that the visa holder can enter Japan. The final entry permit must be issued upon arrival in Japan by the appropriate Immigration Officer after verification of compliance with the requirements of the Japanese Immigration Law.
