Not everyone who wishes to travel to Costa Rica needs a tourist visa. This will depend on your nationality, purpose of visit, country of residence and length of stay. Visa requirements or exceptions are based on international agreements or treaties. In addition, the visa does not guarantee entry to Costa Rica and as in the United States of America, it depends on the immigration officer upon arrival. 1. U.S. citizens do not require a Costa Rican entry visa, however, they must have a current valid passport and a ticket to leave Costa Rica within 90 days of entry (either to return to their home country or to go to another country). As a tourist, U.S. citizens cannot stay longer than 90 days. For a stay of more than 90 days a residency permit must be established.
If you will be traveling to Costa Rica from South America and/or Sub-Saharan Africa, you will need the YELLOW FEVER VACCINE. In accordance with ESTA regulations that went into effect on August 1, 2008, international travelers traveling to the United States must apply for travel authorization as soon as possible, but no less than 72 hours prior to departure of their international flight.
Due to changes in ESTA application processing, real-time approvals will no longer be available. Passengers who apply on the same day as their flight departure risk not having an ESTA approved prior to departure. International travelers without ESTA approval will not be able to board their flight to the United States.
