Although now an attractive and widely known vacation destination, the Gold Coast has come a long way from its humble beginnings. In the mid-1800s, Gold Coast settlement began when people in the lumber industry were attracted to the red cedars of the interior. Soon after, people began to notice the lush land and beautiful beaches, and the wealthy began to develop vacation homes on the land. Villages began to be established in the early 1900s, in what was then called the town of ‘South Coast’. In 1958, after a real estate boom brought on by tourists, businesses began referring to the area as the ‘Gold Coast’. Thus, on May 16, 1958, the Gold Coast was named a city.
Just an hour south of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, the Gold Coast is easily accessible to international travelers. Many choose to fly directly to Brisbane, which has a connecting train line that runs directly to the Gold Coast’s Helensvale streetcar station. Alternatively, travelers can also fly into Gold Coast Airport, located on the southern Gold Coast. From here, buses are available to take you to your accommodation or to Broadbeach streetcar station.
