The celebration of Christmas lasts until Epiphany, January 6, when La Befana is celebrated. Celebrations vary from city to city, with special highlights in Venice and Urbania in the Marche region. January is a great month for skiing in Italy, as many of the best resorts in the Alps and Dolomites are less crowded than in high season. On January 17, the feast of St. Anthony Abbot is celebrated in many towns in the north and center of the country. Bonfires, dances and toasts set the mood for the feast of the patron saint of butchers, domestic animals, basket makers and gravediggers.
In February, temperatures begin to rise, but it is still too early to put away your coat. The ski season reaches its peak coinciding with the school vacations, so the slopes are crowded. Temperatures range from 0°C in the Alps in the north to 15°C in the sunnier south.

Sicily has little to do with the Dolomites; or Milan with the beautiful Tuscany. And yet they all belong to the same country. That is why it is so important to plan carefully when to travel to Italy. It depends on your interests as much as on the area of the country whether the best time is summer or winter. Let’s break down the best dates to make your Italian vacation a real success.
Rome is the capital of Italy and one of the most popular destinations in the country. Emblematic monuments such as the Colosseum are located here. If you have seen the famous Audrey Hepburn movie, Roman Holiday, you will know that the best time to travel to this city is the earliest spring. Winter is perfect for a weekend getaway and summer is best avoided. During the summer period the heat can be annoying and the crowds are well known.
Avoid Venice in the hottest months. The canals are a marvel and riding the gondola is an unforgettable experience. But high temperatures cause the water level to rise and the result is not always pleasant. It is best to visit the most romantic city in the world, with permission of Paris, during the months of April and May, or plan your trip for September. Besides, you will find fewer people during these dates.

Depending on where you are traveling from, you will need to present a vaccination certificate, molecular or antigen negative test and comply with isolation upon arrival in Italy. European citizens must present the green certification.
Aside from learning about the requirements for travel to Italy, you should also know what to do once you are in the country. There is a lot to see in this country, but it is important to understand the restrictions and safety measures to take.
In addition, as the demand for services increases, so do the prices. All this, added to the heat of the date makes summer in Italy a bit of a drag. You may prefer to choose another date that is less crowded and with a more pleasant climate.

If there is one celebration that stands out above all others in February, it is Carnival. Although these pre-Lenten celebrations are held in many cities, Venice is undoubtedly the most famous. The floating city is transformed into an open-air theater, replete with decorated masks, elegant capes and lavish carnival balls, including dinner and entertainment. Other cities where carnival is celebrated in style include Viareggio, Verona and Ivrea, where a huge food fight, known as the Battle of the Oranges, is organized. If you don’t feel like getting dirty, go to Norcia, a town in Umbria, to try the delicacy tartufo nero (black truffles).
Known as the month of roses, May brings the first hints of summer with warmer temperatures and a countryside landscape covered in flowers. The average maximum temperature is usually between 18°C and 21°C (64°F and 70°F). However, as it gets cooler at night, don’t forget to bring a jacket or light coat.
