Cortona (kor ‘ tona) is a municipality in Italy with 23,036 inhabitants (2017), located in the province of Arezzo, the main tourist and cultural center of Val di Chiana aretina. The surface of the municipal area is the fourth largest in Tuscany (second except the provincial capitals) and 29 in Italy. Part of the ancient Kingdom of Etruria, it is located in the south of the province of Arezzo and southeast of the region of Tuscany, on the border with Umbria.

The Etruscan walls of the 5th century B.C. were reinforced in the Middle Ages, a period from which much of the city has been successfully preserved. A walk through the narrow cobbled streets leads to the cathedral, in the Sangallian Renaissance style.
On the way to the Medici fortress, known as Girifalco, we admire the panorama that gives the height of Cortona. On the way up, Gino Severini’s mosaics illustrate the Stations of the Cross, while we are led to the adjoining church of Santa Margherita da Cortona, whose marble sarcophagus decorates the tomb of the saint.
To the north of the city, just outside the walls, we can see the church of Santa Maria Nuova, a feast for the eyes and the subject of many photographs. Also to the north is the archaeological park, with the remains of Etruscan constructions, especially tombs.
Cortona’s location makes it easy to make excursions to Siena, Arezzo, Pienza, Montepulciano, or the thermal baths of Chianchiano and Rapolano. Other attractive towns and places nearby are Rocca Di Pierle, San Giovanni d’Asso and its truffle museum, Castiglione d’Orcia, Buonconvento, or Castiglione Fiorentino.

Near the cathedral is the Diocesan museum, filled with works by artists such as Fra Angelico, Luca Signorelli or Pietro Lorenzetti. The oldest object in the museum is a marble sarcophagus dating from the second century and representing the battle of Dionysius, another important work is the painting The Annunciation by Fra Angelico and the museum also houses a room dedicated exclusively to the works of Signorelli and his workshop, artist born in Cortona.
One of the must-see places in Cortona is Piazza della Repubblica, the central square of Cortona. Here you will find the most beautiful and representative building of the town: the Palazzo Comunale. It is the Town Hall, which was built in the thirteenth century, and it highlights its bell tower and the grand staircase.
