The 14th century Palazzo Guinigi houses the National Museum of Lucca. In addition, a 41m high defense tower adjoins the building. The Guinigi Tower is a key tourist attraction in the city, which can be climbed and seen from the heights of Lucca.
The Cathedral of Lucca is called Il Duomo di San Martino, dating from the 11th century. But its interior in Gothic style was remodeled in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Inside is the image of the Volto Santo and the funerary monument of Ilaria del Carretto.
The Tower of the Hours is the tallest building in the city, it is located in the middle of Via Fillolungo. Climbing it you can see the internal mechanism of the clock and at the end of the ascent you can see the whole city.
If you want to reach Lucca from Florence by train, you have to arrive at S. Maria Novella station in the Florentine city. You will arrive an hour later at the train station in Lucca, which is located about 200m outside the city walls in the southern part of the city (the Porta de San Pietro entrance). It is in Piazza Ricasoli about less than ten minutes from the center of Lucca Tuscany.
