Beginning January 12, 2009, all persons entering the United States under the visa waiver program must have an approved ESTA travel authorization.

All travelers entering the United States (by air or sea) under the visa waiver program must have an approved ESTA travel authorization. The purpose of ESTA is the pre-screening of all visa waiver travelers by the Department of Homeland Security before they depart their respective countries. Check the expiration and issue date of your passport before traveling. If you have a UK passport and are traveling to the EU (except Ireland), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City or Switzerland, your passport must meet the following criteria:

Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland may travel within Europe using a valid national identity card or a valid EU, EEA or Swiss passport.

As a consequence of the UK’s exit from the EU, from October 1, 2021 most EU, EEA and Swiss national ID cards will not be valid for travel to the UK. Travelers will have to use a passport.

This will not apply to EU, EEA and Swiss nationals whose rights are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement, including those eligible for European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) status, frontier workers and EUSS family members. These individuals will be able to continue to use their national identity cards for travel until December 31, 2025, and thereafter if the cards meet International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
