Best way to travel around italy

My first trip to Italy

What we do know for sure is that traveling to Italy on your own means a before and after in the travel experiences of any foreigner who chooses this corner of the world. We do not know a single person who has not loved it. We came back completely in love with its people, its food and its cities. Shall we start?

We recommend the car option, only if you are going to make a route through nearby countries such as Croatia or France. Keep in mind that parking in cities like Milan, Florence or Venice can cost you a lot of money, since the downtown area is restricted to vehicles or is payable.

The big question you will ask yourself when organizing a trip to Italy. As always, it will depend on the days you have available and what you want to see, but we believe that 7/8 days is the minimum you need to enjoy this Mediterranean country.

To travel around Italy we recommend using the train, it is the best option. The stations are located in the center of the cities, besides being a comfortable and inexpensive transport. Calculate that a trip between Milan and Venice has a price of about 20 euros in modern high-speed trains. Check prices and availability on the Trenitalia website.

If you’re in search of romance, Venice is sure to make you fall in love with its artistic surroundings and maze of enchanting canals. The best way to discover the city’s riches is aboard one of the iconic gondolas. As you cruise along the Grand Canal, Venice’s oldest water artery, admire the sights of grand Renaissance palaces and elaborate arched bridges.

The highlight of your Italy itinerary will be your visit to Rome. The Colosseum was the largest built in the Roman Empire and is considered one of the most important exponents of Roman architecture. Enter the heart of the ancient amphitheater to imagine the lively atmosphere of the crowd of screaming Romans as the gladiators fought wildly against each other.

How to travel cheaply in italy

Continue the route by car, now already in the Chianti region, famous for its wines. In the afternoon you will arrive in Florence and you will have time to stroll through its historic center. Book your hotel for the night in Florence. For dinner we will recommend a real gem: a local restaurant, very good and cheap.

The route continues this day to Venice. For this, you can continue with the rental car but we recommend you to go by train (in the Detailed Route we will give you the website and directions so you can book it without problems). Upon arrival you will have time to visit St. Mark’s Square and surroundings. Overnight in Venice.

Recommended route to stroll through the most emblematic neighborhoods of Venice: San Polo, Dorsoduro and Santa Croce. Night in Venice.  We will recommend several local restaurants, especially to try the “cicchetti”, Venetian tapas bars very famous among the locals but unknown to most tourists!

Recommended route to visit the historic center of Milan. At the end take the train to Santa Margherita Ligure. Spend the afternoon in the beautiful village of Portofino. Overnight in Santa Margherita Ligure.

Traveling to italy alone

4. Stay through CouchsurfingCouchsurfing is a hospitality network in which locals host travelers in their homes because they are interested in meeting them, and this has no cost. The most important thing to keep in mind when doing Couchsurfing, is to understand that the main objective of the network is not to get free accommodation, but to generate a cultural exchange, so if your idea is to use the host’s home only to sleep and leave your luggage while you spend the whole day alone touring, we recommend you to look for another type of accommodation. In tourist cities, it is essential that you contact your potential hosts in advance, as there are many travelers who use this network, remember to send a personalized message telling them why you would like to meet them, and not a copy-paste identical for all.Traveling cheaply in Italy: tips to save on transportation
