In this map you can see the entire route of our trip through southern Italy. Also, at the end of the article you will find links to each of the destinations we visited to learn more about each of them.

The trip took us through three of the four Italian regions that cover the heel and toe of the Italian boot. From Barcelona we connected by plane to Bari, drove the entire itinerary by rental car and flew back from Naples.

From Bari we traveled through the beautiful Puglia, probably the region that surprised me the most for its architectural richness, the cleanliness of its streets, the gastronomy and the less touristic exploitation in spite of its great potential.

Southern Italy has some amazing offers. It was difficult to narrow our list down to just 10, but here are the top 10 places to visit in southern Italy.

This protected region boasts some idyllic coastal towns like Amalfi, Erchie, Minores, and Positano: these towns have a number of multicolored houses that are stacked against the hillsides and provide perfect photo opportunities.

A bit of cool history, Paestum is a town on Italian soil, but it was founded by the ancient Greeks when they were in control of this part of Italy! It was then known as Poseidonia after the god of the sea.

The most beautiful places in southern italy

In terms of tourism, southern Italy has some absolutely magnificent offerings including beautiful stretches of dramatic coastline, picture perfect beaches, charming offshore islands and a wealth of historic towns and villages. Possibly the best known region is the beautiful Amalfi Coast and La Cinque Terre; this area on the Mediterranean coast is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Europe. In addition, cities such as Naples, Lecce and Palermo have some iconic historical sites including Castel Nuovo, the Basilica of Santa Croce and Palermo Cathedral waiting to be explored. With so much to offer, a trip to southern Italy can be a real adventure.

In addition, Naples is in close proximity to the legendary ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and in the shadow of the epic volcano Mount Vesuvius: these three sites are must see attractions when visiting this region of Italy.

Obviously, a cheap trip to Italy involves rethinking the areas we are going to visit. A vacation in Venice, Florence or Lazio can empty the bank account of the most affluent travelers in a short time. However, if you decide to visit other less famous (but just as beautiful) regions you will find that the costs go down considerably, especially for food, transport and accommodation.
