The city of Rhodes, the capital of the island and of the Dodecanese region, has been built in the northern part of the island. The first thing that attracts the visitor’s attention is the medieval city. Walls, castles, fortresses and palaces show the history of the island. The medieval town is a Global Heritage Monument and is the largest and best maintained fortified town in Europe, full of Hellenic, Byzantine, medieval and Ottoman monuments. Apart from the town, it is worth visiting Lutra Kalitheas, the famous butterfly valley, Profiti Ilias, and Lindos with the castle and Rodini Park.

Rhodes is also home to the seventh wonder of the ancient world: the Colossus of Rhodes! This statue was built in honor of the sun god, Helios, with a leg on each side of the port. However, this colossal statue no longer exists, and only two columns remain. Rhodes Island has been conquered by many civilizations, including the Venetians and the Turks. However, by far the most famous era was the Order of St. John who built numerous fortresses that can still be seen today as a means of protection against external attacks. The main attraction of the capital is the old town which has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco: you will fall in love at first sight! At the top of Mount Smith, on the beautiful Mandraki, a breathtaking panorama awaits you. Don’t forget to visit the Grand Master’s Palace, stroll along the Knights’ Street and look for the Knights’ Fortress.
One of the most touristic areas of Rhodes, it is one of the most known and visited coastal villages of Rhodes. In the bay of Faliraki you will find an extensive beach ideal for enjoying a sun and beach vacation on the Greek island. Due to the tourist demand, in Faliraki you will also find a wide range of activities to do as well as restaurants, bars, etc….
Rhodes Greece
I spent very little time on the island. Just 4 days, and one of them I spent visiting Symi, a beautiful island very close, also in the Greek Dodecanese archipelago. Not enough time to get to know Rhodes, as I think it is worth spending at least 4 or 5 days to visit Rhodes with a little more tranquility.
PRIVATE TRANSFER. If you want a door-to-door service, this option is very good value, particularly if you are two or more people. They will be waiting for you at the arrivals terminal and will take you to your accommodation.
Chateau Anax Boutique Hotel. A marvel located in the historic center of Rhodes capital, just 200 meters from the Grand Master’s Palace. In high season it is not a low cost accommodation, but you will love it.
If you can skip the peak season (i.e. July and August), the trip to Rhodes will be cheaper (both flights and stay) and you can still enjoy its excellent climate and the warm waters of the eastern Mediterranean. In this sense, June, September and October are very good months to travel to Rhodes.
