Athens, city of contradictionsAs soon as you arrive in Athens, you may be surprised by the high speed and hectic pace of traffic. But take the time to get to know and you will discover many interesting attractions. From the Acropolis and the Parthenon to the modern clubs, you are sure to find many interesting contradictions in this ancient city. It was remodeled for the 2004 Olympic Games, so getting around Athens should be a breeze.
From Athens, you’ll have plenty of options for a bus trip (around €10) or a sightseeing cab to Delphi & Meteora. The cabs will charge per ride, and not per person, which makes them very affordable.
Royal CreteCrete, the largest and southernmost island of Greece, is an excellent ferry destination. Remember to visit the Palace of Knossos. It is considered the center of Minoan civilization and culture and was the home of King Minos, whose wife gave birth to the mythological Minotaur (half man, half bull). You will be able to see in person the royal chambers, the throne room and the queen’s quarters.

Greece: Train tickets for Greece can be purchased locally or online. Advance tickets for intercity connections are cheaper than the normal fare and are only available online.
This direct train departs Thessaloniki at 05:50 and arrives in Sofia at 14:20. The ticket fare is 18 EUR. International train tickets are only available at the larger train stations in Greece.
Travel from Greece to Italy by train and ferry. Ferry routes are from Patras via Igoumenitsa to Bari, Ancona, Trieste and Venice. All ferry ports, except Igoumenitsa, are connected to the rail network.
1) Thessaloniki to Florina: travel time is 2:40 hours. A daily train connection with departure time in Thessaloniki at 13:20. Arrival time in Florina is 16:00. The ticket fare is 10 EUR.
3) Bitola to Skopje: the travel time is 3:20 hours. Three daily train connections with departure times in Bitola at 03:15 / 12:50 / 18:30. And arrival times in Skopje at 06:40 / 16:15 / 21:50. The ticket fare is 6 EUR.

Once we had cooled down and put away the tridents, all that remained was to wait for the train that would take us to Thessaloniki, the commercial, railway and civilized heart of a Greece that seemed too passionate for my taste.

With a history spanning four millennia, Patras is home to many, many monuments from the time of the ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine empires. Most notable are the Patras Castle that towers over the city and the ancient Roman Odeon, which in summer is used for concerts.
Among the more recently built attractions is the Basilica of St. Andrew of Patras, located by the sea. When you are admiring the Gulf of Patras, look to the right to see the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, which is 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) long and connects the Peloponnese peninsula with the Greek mainland.
