Guide to Greece
Athens: Travel GuideAre you planning a trip to the capital of Greece? These 6,000 words are much more than the typical compilations or tourist guides to Athens that you will find on any Greek national tourism website or tour operator. This is not a list of TOP sights and visits to do in the city. At least not only that.
3Lose yourself in the colorful alleys of the Plaka neighborhood – Although it is the most touristy neighborhood of the city and is usually crowded with tourists and locals, that does not detract one iota of its charm. Many of its streets are pedestrian and are lined with beautiful neoclassical buildings where part of the high society lives. Some of the best taverns, cafes and restaurants in the city are located there. The Athenians know it and that is why it is their usual meeting place.
4Go in to see the Parthenon friezes preserved in the Acropolis Museum – Not all of them (since the British Museum has most of them), but all of them. For me it is one of the most interesting visits and one that will help you understand the trajectory of the sacred rock throughout history. The original sculptures of the caryatids of the Erechtheion are also exhibited here, while the ones you will see in the Acropolis are a recreation. If you have time I advise you to stop at their cafeteria and have a drink on the terrace with direct views of the Acropolis.
