Athens is not only popular for being the capital of Greece, but also for being a political, economic and cultural center of the country. All of the above, makes Athens an ideal place to travel, but its culture is also remarkable because it has ancient Greek monuments, temples and buildings that have endured over time.
Although many buildings are not preserved, such buildings highlight the classical architecture, which allow its visitors to be amazed. Any trip to Greece starts and ends in Athens. Except ours. It is true that we landed at Athens International Airport, but, as we told you in our article about the itinerary, as soon as we arrived, we picked up the rental car and without having set foot in the capital we started our Greek road trip. Then we returned to Madrid by direct flight from Santorini. So Athens was actually an intermediate stop on our trip (specifically between Delphi and Milos). We knew it was essential and therefore we decided to dedicate 3 full days and nights to it. And we did not spare a single minute. And after this visit, Athens has become one of our favorite capitals in Europe.
“Acropolis” literally means the most prominent place in a city; that is why every ancient Greek city had its own acropolis. The marble temples we see today originate from the 4th century B.C. but before these, on the same site, there were others as this same area was inhabited much earlier. The main constructions are in its highest part:
What to see in Athens
The first thing to visit is the Acropolis. In Greek, the Acropolis translates as “high city”. Its first function was defensive, but it was also the seat of the main places of worship. This is the most famous site in the country and contains the best known monuments of the classical Greek era, are:
To eat some of the best morsels of Greek food…like for example the Koulouri, the Gyros or Souvlaki, Savory pies like the Tiropita, the falafel…And if you like sweet: the Loukoumades or the Galaktoboureko cake (Delicious!).
The best viewpoint both day and night to see the Acropolis I think is from the Filopappos Hill. But Attention! not from the top but from the access road! just before reaching the top, turn around! You have Acropolis at an optimal distance to take an amazing picture.
Other (almost) free viewpoints can be the terraces of hotels or bars like Thea Bar. Bar Loukoumi, The Rooftop Bar…etc these are cheap but there are other luxury options like the terrace of the Hotel Grande Bretagne (prepare your wallet!)
