If you have ever flicked through a travel brochure or read online about a particular area of the world, you will know it can be hard to actually decide where you want to head to on holiday or be the next stop of your round the world tour.
But sometimes, we just want to go somewhere simple. Somewhere where there is plenty to do, the sun is bright and the drinks are flowing – if you want them to of course! For simplicity but also to experience a fantastic island that has a little something for everybody, explore the island of Gran Canaria.
Beach Heaven
If it is beaches you are looking for, then Gran Canaria is perhaps the ideal place. This island has an impressive 128 beaches which, combined with year round sunshine, are often packed with tourists and visitors. Whilst many are golden coloured and how you would imagine a beach on a tropical island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean to look, many are in fact black – a clue that points towards Gran Canaria’s volcanic origins. Anfi, Taurito and Las Burras are just three of the dozens upon dozens you can choose from.
A Water Sport Mecca
Gran Canaria is surrounded by water and therefore, as you could have guessed, has a number of water based activities you can try. If you have always wanted to try a sea based activity, there are fewer better places to do so than in Gran Canaria. Sea temperatures rarely drop below 18ºC in winter so you will not be able to cry off because of the cold neither! Between April and October you will find perfect sailing conditions. Head to Puerto Rico, Pasito Blanco, Arguineguín or Puerto de Mogán to find the best sailing schools where you will be taught the basics and before you know it you will be enjoying the sea and wind for yourself. If sailing doesn’t float your boat you could instead try a spot of surfing, diving, fishing or windsurfing.
A Rugged Wonder
Nice weather automatically makes you want to get up and go in the mornings and with temperatures averaging 23 degrees all year round, you will certainly have a great deal of vitality in Gran Canaria. The interior of the island is a wonderment of differing landscapes that often surprises visitors. Volcanic mountains, woodland and sand dunes are just three of the terrains which have helped make the island well known and an important place for wildlife study and watching. The best way to spend your days inland is by exploring the Caminos Reales, which are walking paths that snake thorough the island’s interior regions.
Gran Canaria deserves it recognition as a beach paradise. But do not be fooled into thinking this is all it has in its locker. As you will see on your visit, it has lots of other totally different sides to its character too!
