To stay in the United States of America, French citizens are eligible for ESTA authorization. But in which cases is this document issued and how is it obtained? The procedure to obtain it is very simple. You just have to be strict and respect the eligibility criteria in all aspects.

ESTA is the acronym for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. This electronic authorization system was introduced in 2009 after the introduction of the Visa Waiver Program. This visa-free program is aimed at citizens of 38 different countries. Among the member states, France is in the same position as all EU countries. This device is an alternative to the standard visa and allows the French to go to the United States much more easily.

Thanks to the authorization, French travelers wishing to go to the United States are exempt from the U.S. visa. However, to take advantage of this alternative, the U.S. authorities require foreign nationals to respect certain travel conditions.

Requirements to enter France

Verify the expiration and issue date of your passport before traveling. If you have a UK passport and are traveling to the EU (except Ireland), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City or Switzerland, your passport must meet the following criteria:

Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland may travel within Europe using a valid national identity card or a valid EU, EEA or Swiss passport.

As a consequence of the UK’s exit from the EU, from October 1, 2021 most EU, EEA and Swiss national ID cards will not be valid for travel to the UK. Travelers will have to use a passport.

This will not apply to EU, EEA and Swiss nationals whose rights are protected by the Withdrawal Agreement, including those eligible for European Union Settlement Scheme (EUSS) status, frontier workers and EUSS family members. These individuals will be able to continue to use their national identity cards for travel until December 31, 2025, and thereafter if the cards meet International Civil Aviation Organization standards.
