A national driver’s license is sufficient for trips of up to three months (in the Yukon Territory: 1 month). Seat belts are mandatory in all provinces. The maximum speed limit on highways is usually 80 or 100 km/h, in cities 50 km/h and on roads 110 km/h. Traffic regulations are similar to those in Europe. Special features: At traffic lights you can turn right even on red and overtake on multi-lane roads, but school buses with emergency lights on must not be passed, even from the opposite direction. The Canadian Automobile Club CAA also helps foreign club members (emergency call 800 2224357).
It is best to book domestic flights with Air Canada already with your transatlantic ticket, as free stopovers are often available. Longer ferry routes should also be booked in advance: for example, the West Coast inland passage (www.bcferries.com), the Nova Scotia to Newfoundland trip (www.marine-atlantic.ca), as well as boat trips on Lake Huron with the MS Chi-Cheemaun (www.ontarioferries.com).

The municipal government administers local services, such as municipal roads, garbage and recyclable waste collection, winter maintenance of municipalities, municipal recreational areas, sanitary control services for local commerce, municipal markets, cultural and sports centers and, in general, a wide range of community services that vary according to the needs of each community.
There may also be day care centers for children, services for the elderly or sick, and orientation and assistance programs for newly arrived immigrants. It depends on the budget of each municipality and the needs of the community.
Generally, municipalities publish information brochures for citizens on local government services and facilities and how to contact those responsible for these services.
Working mothers (and fathers) are entitled to paid maternity leave. In addition, after the birth of the baby, they also have the right to receive specialized nursing care for the newborn.

Via Rail is Canada’s national passenger rail service. Its U.S. counterpart, Amtrak , provides connecting rail services to Toronto from New York via Niagara Falls; to Montreal from New York; and to Vancouver from Seattle via Bellingham. Its trains are an economical way to get to Canada, with tickets starting from US$43 round-trip between Seattle and Vancouver. Not many people take the train as a regular means of intercity transportation. Most simply drive to where they want to go if the distance is short (which in Canada can mean hundreds of kilometers!), or fly if the distances are long.Important: If you are traveling across the border on Amtrak services, you must validate your tickets before boarding. Pick up your tickets over the counter (not at the Quick-Trak kiosk) and show your passport or travel document to the agent (travel document information is sent in advance on a manifest to border services to facilitate crossing procedures). Some stations, such as New York City, have a dedicated window for international passengers. As of 2017, Hostelling International members are entitled to a 12.5% discount on Via Rail .
