Did you know that as of December 1, 2016, Mexicans will not need a visa to travel to Canada? However they will have to apply for an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization), which is an entry requirement for those transiting by air.

As a tourist you should consider that you require a temporary visa, this type of visa is applicable to foreigners who intend to enter Canada in the condition of temporary resident in order to stay for a period not exceeding 6 months.

Tourists, students and workers can extend their stay in Canada, as long as they can prove to the Canadian Government that they have a valid reason and sufficient financial means to support themselves. The extension must be made 30 days before the expiration of their permit in Canada.

Persons who have lost their status in Canada because their permit expired or because the extension was denied may apply for a restoration of status which must be made within 90 days of the expiration of their permit. As with the extension, there must be a valid reason and they must have the financial means to support themselves in Canada.

Some Canadian consulates or embassies require this letter to contain an official stamp from a municipal official certifying that the information contained in the document is true. It is a simple procedure that can be done at the mayor’s office of the municipality where the family member resides in Canada.

Also known by its acronym in English, ETA, for “Electronic Travel Authorization”, is an electronic authorization issued by the Canadian government to foreign travelers who do not require a tourist visa to enter Canadian territory.

Any foreign traveler, exempt from visitor or tourist visas, who wishes to take a flight to Canada or pass through Canada to the final destination, must obtain an electronic travel authorization.

In reciprocity, Mexico will abolish, as of this date, the visa requirement for Canadians holding diplomatic and special passports, as well as their dependents, who wish to visit or stay in Mexican territory for up to ninety days effective as of their entry into Mexico.

This measure will undoubtedly trigger a greater commercial exchange between both countries, better tourist flows and a greater number of student and academic exchanges, one of the priorities outlined by both governments during the last state visit.

An eTA is an entry and travel requirement for Mexican citizens flying to Canada for short stays (up to 6 months at a time). You can only use it when traveling for visit, business, tourist activities or in transit through a Canadian airport.

In general, if you wish to work or study, you must apply for a work permit or study permit before travelling to Canada. If your permit is approved, you will automatically be issued an eTA, which is required to board your flight to Canada.

Applying for an eTA is a simple, online process and takes only a few minutes. Most applicants get their eTA approval (via email) within minutes. However, some applications can take several days to process if you are asked to submit additional supporting documents. It is best to obtain an eTA before booking your flight to Canada.

When we approve your eTA, the authorization will be linked to the passport you used to make the application. You are required to present that passport when you check in at the airline counter for your flight to Canada.
