Singapore, Aug 1 (EFE) – The president of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosy, kicked off Monday in Singapore a tour of Asia, marked by the unknown whether it will include a controversial visit to Taiwan, talking with the Singaporean government on the self-governed island, whose sovereignty Beijing claims.
The Chinese government has made it clear that it perceives the trip as a threat, and Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian warned that the Asian giant “will respond firmly” to what it considers a provocation, and that the U.S. will have to “assume all the consequences” arising from the possible visit.
In addition to Taiwan, one of the issues causing the most friction between China and the United States, Pelosi and Lee Hsien Loong discussed the war in Ukraine and climate change in the international arena.
The prime minister of Singapore, a country that plays equidistance between China and the United States – strong economic and security partners, respectively – stressed the importance of “a stable China-U.S. relationship for regional peace and security.”

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi kicked off her Asia tour in Singapore, marked by speculation over whether or not it will include a visit to Taiwan. China continues to multiply its threats to the US if Pelosi enters the island whose sovereignty is claimed by Beijing. The spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry avoided answering what would be the reprisals in the event of an eventual visit: “Let’s wait and see”, while Taiwanese media take for granted the arrival of the Democratic leader.

There are regular high-level exchanges such as the Leaders’ Retreat, Joint Ministerial Committee (JMC) meetings on Iskandar Malaysia and ministerial-level visits.
On August 9, 1965, Singapore seceded from Malaysia to become an independent and sovereign state. The separation was the result of deep political and economic differences between the ruling parties of Singapore and Malaysia, which created communal tensions that resulted in race riots in July and September 1964.
Singaporeans can generally visit Malaysia without a visa. As visa requirements can change at short notice, we recommend that you contact your travel agent or the Malaysian High Commission in Singapore for updated information.
