Washington, Jul 30 (EFE) – U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Singapore and Vietnam in August to “strengthen relations and expand economic cooperation” with those two Southeast Asian countries, her spokeswoman, Symone Sanders, said Friday.

Harris will become the first U.S. vice president in history to visit Vietnam, a country where Americans lost more than 60,000 soldiers in a decade-long war that ended in 1975 and in which more than one million Vietnamese died.

His trip will come on the heels of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s visit to Vietnam this week, during which he met with his counterpart Phan Van Giang, as part of U.S. efforts to strengthen its alliances and contain China’s influence.

The United States has a bilateral trade agreement with Singapore that went into effect in 2004, and since then bilateral trade has grown by more than 60% to more than $47 billion in 2019.
