When U.S. President John F. Kennedy proposed to Congress and the citizens of the United States a commitment to send astronauts to the Moon “before the end of this decade,” his motives were obvious. As secret recordings of a meeting held at the White House in November 1962 reveal, for Kennedy, getting to the Moon represented “in a sense a race…. The Soviet Union has turned this issue into a demonstration of power of the [American and Soviet] systems….. Whatever we do should be geared to the goal of reaching the Moon before the Soviets.”

As is well known, the United States, through the Apollo project, would succeed in putting two American astronauts on the lunar surface on July 20, 1969 (the early morning of the 21st in Europe). U.S. astronaut Frank Rubio will leave for the space station from Kazakhstan with two Russians in September. That same month, Russian cosmonaut Anna Kikina will fly with two Americans and a Japanese aboard a SpaceX rocket taking off from Florida. Another crew exchange will take place next spring.

Friday’s news was released just hours after President Vladimir Putin ordered the replacement of Russian space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin, although the move does not appear to have any connection to the crew swap. Rogozin is expected to be assigned a new position.

NASA explained that the agreement will “ensure continued safe operations” of the space station and protect those living aboard. There are currently seven people there: three Americans and one Italian who flew with SpaceX and three Russians who arrived on a Soyuz.
