Russian authorities on Wednesday finally gave the go-ahead for an Israeli government delegation to travel to the country to meet with senior Russian officials to discuss a possible ban on the Jewish Agency’s activities in Russia.
The delegation was scheduled to head to Russia on Sunday, but Russian authorities refused to allow it to arrive. Now, the trip will go ahead on the instructions of Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid and in coordination with the Russian authorities, as assured by the Government of Israel.
The delegation includes representatives of the Prime Minister’s Office, the National Security Council, the Foreign Ministry, the Justice Ministry and the Ministry of Immigration and Absorption and will be supervised by Foreign Ministry Director General Alon Ushpiz.

Actually it is always the same standard document, consisting of 2 parts: a “voucher of services”=”voucher” (in English or Russian) plus a “confirmation of reception of foreign tourist”=”confirmation of accommodation booking” =”podtverzhdenie” (in Russian). This document is issued by a Russian travel agency authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue it or a hotel entitled to do so. In most cases this document is arranged when you book your accommodation in Russia (but it is not automatic, you have to do it specially), i.e. when booking any type of accommodation, do not forget to ask about it (ask for “visa support”) before booking. There are also travel or visa agencies that manage it as an additional service. They provide a copy by fax or in PDF format. The visa will be issued exactly for the dates of stay indicated in the letter of invitation. Normally it is not required to present a reservation of air or train tickets to apply for the visa (you can read all the requirements on their website). The visa will be affixed to a page of your passport.
Israel condemned Russian troops’ incursion into Ukraine
A U.S. State Department spokesman told The Times of Israel on Thursday that the U.S. hopes Israeli and Russian authorities will reach an agreement “to preserve the ability of Russian Jews to travel to Israel.”
Israel has been trying to defuse tensions with Russia, a major power and key player in the Middle East, whose motives for threatening Jewish institutions remain unclear. Israel has relied on Russian non-intervention to carry out airstrikes against military bases in Syria suspected of being linked to Iran.
Jewish Agency officials initially believed that disputes over the group’s operations in Russia could be resolved quickly through negotiation and compromise when Russian officials warned earlier this month that the group could face sanctions.
Goldschmidt, who left Russia in March to oppose the conflict, warned Thursday that “dark clouds will hang over Jews in Russia” as relations between the two countries deteriorate due to the war in Ukraine.
