Friday’s news was released just hours after President Vladimir Putin ordered the replacement of Russian space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin, although the move does not appear to have any connection to the crew swap. Rogozin is expected to be assigned a new position.
NASA explained that the agreement will “ensure continued safe operations” of the space station and protect those living aboard. There are currently seven people there: three Americans and one Italian who flew with SpaceX and three Russians who arrived on a Soyuz.
