Washington, Jan 23 (EFE) – The United States on Sunday recommended its citizens not to travel to Russia in view of the current tension with Ukraine, just after making the same recommendation for that country and ordering the families of its diplomatic staff to leave it.

In a statement, the State Department places Russia at level 4 of its travel recommendations, that is, it recommends its citizens not to travel to that country and among the reasons it gives is that there is “harassment” against them.

The recommendation comes shortly after the one issued in the same sense for Ukraine. In this case, moreover, the State Department has ordered the families of its embassy workers to leave Ukraine and has recommended the departure of non-essential personnel in view of the “threat” of military action by Russia.

In its statement on Russia, among the reasons given by the State Department for asking its citizens not to go to that country is the tension with Ukraine but also the possibility of Americans being subjected to “harassment”, including by “Russian government security officials”.

“The devastating effects of Russia’s aggression have disrupted Ukraine’s economy, which in turn has exacerbated global food insecurity,” he specifies, even though Ukraine has long been the “breadbasket of Europe,” giving food to millions of people around the world.

Food insecurity has increased due to “Putin’s war of choice.” It was not caused, as the Kremlin claims, “by sanctions that the United States and many other countries have imposed in response to Russia’s horrific aggression against Ukraine.”

“All these actions have worsened food insecurity around the world,” he said, while “the United States and its partners have taken great care to avoid exacerbating food insecurity.”

U.S. sanctions, for example, are specifically written to prevent food insecurity: they include exclusions for agricultural products and allow transactions for the export and re-export of food to and from Russia, even with a sanctioned person or entity.
