Names of U.S. soldiers
Vladimir Putin repeatedly insisted that only professional soldiers and officers were involved in Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine and that no conscripts would be used. However, the Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged on March 9 that it used soldiers recruited in Ukraine (in English) and that some were captured by Ukrainian forces.
“What kind of trust can there be if Putin says one day that no conscripts will be sent there … and then the Defense Ministry acknowledges that they were there?” commented Alexei Tabalov, a lawyer advising the conscripts, to the Associated Press.
“The families are in utter ignorance,” he told The Guardian newspaper. “I know the situation is really bad when the families tell me they can no longer contact the soldiers.”
A student (in English) from Donbas was sent by the Russian military to Mariupol without training and with rifles older than those given to professional soldiers. His unit experienced heavy fighting. Members of the unit drank water with dead frogs.
U.S. military in ukraine
The United States continues to militarily reinforce its allies in Eastern Europe. According to Reuters and AP news agencies, on February 6 a plane carrying U.S. troops landed at an airport located in southeastern Poland, some 90 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The news coincides with the declarations of the former Ukrainian Defense Minister who warned that Russia has enough troops to take over Kiev.
In mid-week U.S. President Joe Biden ordered the dispatch of some 3,000 additional troops to Poland and Romania as part of Washington’s efforts to reassure North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies amid tension between Russia and the West over Ukraine.
