6The Franciscan Andrés de Olmos disembarked in Mexico in 1528. He was one of the first to learn Nahuatl and to evangelize the indigenous populations in this language. Conceived for this purpose, his Treatise on the Seven Deadly Sins6 is a compilation of sermons in Nahuatl inspired by the Latin work of St. Vincent Ferrer: Sermones de peccatis capitalibus pro ut septem petitionibus orationis dominicae opponuntur. These texts contain the oldest exempla that were translated into Nahuatl. Each anecdote is announced by a margin note (“Ex” for exempla) and the terms: yzcatqui neixcuitilli anoço tlamauiçolli, “this is an example or a prodigy (a miracle)”, which we will find again later in the Novo-Hispanic sermons of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Contrary to the usage of the next centuries, Olmos almost never cites his source, nor the place or date where the event he refers to took place. On the other hand, the style he uses to translate these stories, simple and clear, is strikingly foreshadowing that of later translations.
