The Consular Passport and Visa Division (CPV) of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, which has the central function of organizing and issuing passports, is responsible for issuing passports on request to Indian citizens. Passports are issued through 37 locations in India and at 162 Indian diplomatic consular missions around the world.
In addition, selected Indian passport offices in the country, as well as Indian foreign missions, are authorized to issue regular India-Bangladesh and India-Sri Lanka passports to Indian citizens residing in West Bengal, the Northeast, Tamil Nadu and the Pondicherry Territory. These two passports allow Indians who possess them to travel only and respectively to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka and are not valid for travel to other countries.
Indian nationality is acquired by descent, adoption, ordinary naturalization or facilitated naturalization. Facilitated naturalization refers to holders of Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI).
