How to backpack in the United States

Indice

The reason why it is one of our favorite and most repeated destinations is that we are lucky to have family in Indiana, and they treat us so well every time we go, that they always make us look for an excuse to come back (a wedding, a graduation, a new cousin…). As soon as they get careless they have us squatting for a few days.

Besides having a valid passport, the most important requirement I need to travel to the USA (whether it is the first time or not), is to apply for an authorization to enter the country, known as ESTA.

Any foreign citizen traveling to the United States for tourism needs a visitor’s visa (B2), except if he/she belongs to countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (ESTA).

Tourist travel is defined as a short visit for vacation, visiting family and friends, medical treatment, participation in social events, participation as an amateur in a musical, sporting or similar event or contest, enrollment in a short recreational course of study (e.g. a two-day cooking class during a vacation).

In compliance with the U.S. presidential executive order signed on January 27, 2017, the issuance of visas to foreign nationals from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen has been suspended until further notice is received. If you are a national or dual national of one of these countries, please do not schedule a visa appointment or pay visa fees at this time. If you already have an appointment scheduled, DO NOT ATTEND your appointment, as the U.S. Department of State will not be able to complete your visa interview.

If you meet these requirements, you will be able to travel using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Apply for it from the official website, a process that will not take you more than a few minutes, but before you do so, please note:

Like the ESTA, the I-94 form allows stays in the U.S. of up to 90 days, and for its computation, periods in third countries count. Therefore, the authorities advise against “crossing the border as a possibility to reset the days counter to zero”.

On this website you can decide what type of visa you need to travel to the United States, since at the time of requesting an appointment for the interview you will not be informed about this issue. It will be at the interview itself when this question is discussed in more detail.

Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who wish to enter the United States temporarily for business (B-1 visa category), for tourism (B-2 visa category) or for a combination of both purposes (B-1 / B-2).

Here are some examples of activities that require different visa categories and cannot be performed on a visitor visa: Study; Employment; Paid performances or any professional performance before a paying audience; Arrival as a crew member on a ship or aircraft; Work as foreign press, radio, film, print journalism or other media; Permanent residence in the United States; Travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for your child.
