Mexico shares borders with the United States, Belize and Guatemala, and has coastlines on the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, ensuring a fantastic combination of beach resorts, one of the country’s main attractions.

With a population of more than 120 million, Mexico is a notoriously populous country and, in fact, the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. The country is also home to one of the world’s largest cities, the capital Mexico City, a high-altitude city known for its historic center, the 13th-century Aztec Templo Mayor and the baroque Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico.

As one of the five cradles of civilization, Mexico is perhaps most famous for the importance of its ancient communities and advanced Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Mayans, Aztecs and Teotihuacans.

Undoubtedly the country’s most famous civilization was the Maya, who flourished between 250 and 900 A.D., when they built cities, invented a calendar system and produced written languages. Tours of Mexico often include the well-preserved ruins of cities and temples built during this historic era. This civilization is remembered for its pyramidal temples and religious practices; and its empire was centered in a geographic area encompassing the entire Yucatan Peninsula, present-day Guatemala, Belize and parts of the Mexican states of Tabasco and Chiapas, as well as parts of Honduras and El Salvador to the west.

I was in Mexico in 2009, and although I didn’t know it at the time, that trip started this blog, and everything that came after. During almost a month traveling by bus around the country, I collected a lot of stories, and I still haven’t finished uploading them to the blog. The older posts are part of my travel diary at the time.

Planning a trip without leaving out the must-sees of Mexico City can be overwhelming. Mexico City (CDMX now, DF before) beats to the rhythm of more than 20 million hearts and is the largest city in Latin America. When I saw it at night for the first time, I was on top of a…

I had been to Mexico in 2009, and I had been left with the desire to visit it. Xochimilco, that sort of “Mexican Venice” so close to CDMX (or DF at that time), had escaped from my itinerary, and I promised myself that when I came back, whenever it was, I would not let it pass…

We arrived in Tulum after a 1 hour drive and got off at the entrance to the archaeological site. The city, or rather the region, is like a big square: one side is the road that goes to Playa or Chetumal, on one side is the town and on the other the entrance to the archaeological area….

On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus’ first voyage took place, also known as the “Voyage of Discovery”; a maritime expedition captained by the navigator in the service of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand of Castile and Aragon, with the purpose of finding a new trade route to India.

The return of the expedition took place on January 16, 1493, a few days later a storm separated the two ships, since by that time the Santa Maria had run aground. The Pinta arrived in Bayonne, now Galicia, at the end of February and announced to the Catholic Monarchs the discovery of new lands.

The Servicio de Información Agroalimentaria y Pesquera (SIAP) invites you to know this and other historical maps that the Mapoteca “Manuel Orozco y Berra” keeps in its great collection. You can consult the web page: http://mapoteca.siap.gob.mx/
