Located close to the Atlantic Ocean, West Palm Beach is a popular tourist destination in Florida. In Palm Beach County, this city is ranked as the most populous city. The main airport serving this city is Palm Beach International Airport. Its IATA Code is PBI. The airport is operated and managed by Palm Beach County Department of Airports. It is located 5.6 km to the city’s west and serves the entire Palm Beach County.
The airport is accessible from I-95, Congress Avenue and Southern Boulevard. Military trail borders the airport on its west. The airport is constantly handling increased number of passengers with passage of time. In the year 2008, the airport handled 6,476,303, in 2009, the passengers handled were 5,994,606, in 2010 and 2011, and the passengers handled were 5,887,723 and 5,769,583 respectively.
In 1936, this International Airport started its operations as Morrison Field. The name was given in honor of Ms. Grace K. Morrison. She was the principal participant in the airfield’s planning and organization. In 1936, the first flight that departed for New York was Eastern Air Lines DC-2. On December 19, 1936, the airport was officially dedicated to the public. Soon, many flights to West Palm Beach started plying their services.
After some time, airport authorities decided to launch expansion plans that included a new airstrip and an administration building. After Palm Beach Aero Corporation obtained a lease, on the airport’s south first terminal and hangers were built. Eastern Air Lines Terminal was the name given to this new terminal.
During World War II, this field was used by the US Army and Air Forces. After Pearl Harbor attack, Morrison Field was used as training ground. Later on, it was also used as a staging base for the Allied invasion of France. In order to participate in the invasion of Normandy, several aircrafts departed Morrison en-route to the UK.
Sprawled in an area of 2,120 acres, the airport has three runways. These three runways are- Runway 10L-28R: 10,008 x 150 ft. With Asphalt surface, runway 10R-28L: 3,213 x 75 ft. With Asphalt surface and runway 14-32: 6,931 x 150 ft.
A change in the designations of runway was brought about on December 17, 2009. Earlier, the runway designations were-Runway 9L-27R: 10,008 x 150 ft., runway 9R-27L: 3,213 x 75 ft and runway 13-31: 6,931 x 150 ft.
On the airport’s north side, a new 73 m Airport Traffic Control Tower is operational at present. An ATBM Base building is a single story building with 9,000 sq ft area. Due to a wide array of scenic attractions available here, more and more people are planning to visit this destination.
