Although the country is landlocked, there are three rivers running through Zambia. One of the most popular places is Victoria Falls, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also safaris for travelers, without the large crowds that safaris in Kenya and South Africa often have.

Yellow fever vaccinations will be required for travelers coming from countries where there is a yellow fever outbreak, especially certain countries in South America or Africa. Check with a specialist in your itinerary to see if it is required for your trip to Zambia.

A passport valid for at least four months beyond the intended stay is required for entry into the country. Passports that are not machine-readable will prevent holders from entering the country. Electronic visas may be obtained prior to departure; passengers must carry a printed confirmation with them. Mexican citizens traveling as tourists may stay for a maximum of 90 days if they have a visa. The visa can be obtained on arrival and the passport must contain an unused visa page.

Adults traveling to South Africa from a yellow fever endemic area, such as Argentineans, Brazilians, Colombians, Paraguayans and Venezuelans, among others, will be required to present an international yellow fever vaccination certificate upon entering the country. The same applies to passengers with passports of other nationalities but residing in these countries. For more information visit the Consular Section.

All persons arriving in South Africa from a Yellow Fever endemic area (including transit passengers) must present the International Certificate of Vaccination or an exemption certificate. It is recommended that the required vaccinations be administered four to six weeks prior to travel to South Africa (a yellow fever vaccination certificate is valid only 10 days after vaccination and has lifetime coverage).

“With omicron present in nearly 60 countries globally, travel bans affecting mainly African countries are difficult to justify,” WHO regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, said in a statement Thursday.

The African Union (AU) already demanded Tuesday the withdrawal of these measures because “current evidence, which has highlighted the spread (of omicron) globally (…), does not support selective travel bans imposed on southern African countries.”

“We have moved from a situation where we were receiving two to three million doses a week to a situation where we are receiving 20 million a week,” the coordinator of WHO’s Immunization and Health Vaccine Development Program for Africa, Richard Mihigo, told a virtual press conference today.

In this regard, 23 of the total of 54 sovereign nations on the continent have used only between 50% and 79% of the doses received, while 27 countries have already administered more than 80% and only two less than half.

Visa information for Zambia is considerably confusing but, basically, any traveler can obtain an entry visa (upon payment of between 50 and 80 €) at the border posts at the entrance to the country. However, before traveling it is advisable to check with the Zambian embassy for any special requirements. For more information you can visit this website of visas to Zambia.

The main natural disaster that undermines the country’s growth potential is the endless drought that plagues the region, a climatic factor that favors the reduction of crop yields and results in a high percentage of the population living below the poverty line.

Although it is not the most dangerous country in Africa, far from it, security conditions in Zambia are no wonder. The city centers after dark can be dangerous and violent robberies are relatively frequent, both in the cities and in some tourist areas, such as around Victoria Falls. We recommend avoiding driving in some western and border areas, or at least not driving alone. For more information on security we advise you to visit the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
