(1 votes, average: 5.00 out of 5)Loading… Johannesburg, Joburg to the locals, was my first stop in South Africa on my 3-week itinerary around the country. It was a surprising landing (from the air, the city looks huge) and totally different first impressions than I could have expected. Take a look at the pictures and tell me if you imagined it like this.

Johannesburg is the largest and most populous city in South Africa and is the capital of the Gauteng province but, contrary to what you might expect, it is not the capital of the country. It is one of the most important cities on the continent and many people from all over Africa move there in search of opportunities. The city was founded in the midst of hostile landscapes due to its great mineral wealth: important gold and diamond deposits are found nearby. It is said to be one of the most dangerous cities in the world, but here are my first impressions when I got there.

Everyone kept telling me that Johannesburg had hardly anything and in the end I was left wanting more. I did not have the chance to visit it, however, I have read that this museum dedicated to African culture, which is located in Mary Fitzgerald Square, is extremely interesting. It is pending for the next visit!
