U.S. requires vaccination of foreigners for entry into the country

Coronavirus infections have been stable in India for weeks, with 10,549 new cases as of Friday, but the detection of a new variant by South African health authorities has prompted the Indian government to call for “rigorous” screening of passengers.

South African scientists and health authorities confirmed last Thursday the detection of a new variant of the coronavirus, identified as B.1.1.529, with several cases also detected in neighboring Botswana and Hong Kong.

South African scientists have expressed concern about the 30 or so mutations of the variant, as some of them could have an impact on transmissibility and their potential ability to evade prior immunity or protection.

Uruguay will allocate 200,000 doses of the US Pfizer vaccine to foreign tourists as of December 1, when they will be able to get an appointment for its administration, announced Friday the Secretary of the Presidency, Álvaro Delgado.

Spain lifts veto on tourists if they are already vaccinated

“The Commission will propose, in close coordination with the Member States, to activate the emergency brake to stop air travel from the southern African region due to the worrying variant B.1.1.529,” wrote the President.

The Italian Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza, signed the order banning the entry of citizens who have passed through South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Namibia. Mozambique, Namibia and Swaziland.

The British government, meanwhile, has acted “extremely quickly” to introduce a ban from Friday to flights from six African countries with an approach focused on “security” to the new variant of the coronavirus detected in South Africa, explained today the Minister of Transport, Grant Shapps.

The London Executive bans from 12 GMT air services from six African destinations, including South Africa, due to the spread of the B.1.1.529 variant, which could make current vaccines less effective.

Spain opens borders to vaccinated tourists and cruise ships

Dakar, Dec 6 (EFE) – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa today again demanded an end to international restrictions imposed on southern African countries following the detection of the omicron variant and called them “hypocrisy of the worst kind”.

“These countries have always told us that we should base our decisions on science, but when it is their turn to apply it to themselves they only look to their own self-interest,” Ramaphosa lamented Monday, speaking at an International Forum on Peace and Security in Dakar.

“The devastating impact that these travel bans have is well known, the UN Secretary General (António Guterres) has called it ‘travel apartheid’,” the South African leader, who is on a brief official visit to Senegal, stressed in his speech.

South African scientists and authorities announced last November 25 the detection of the new variant of the B.1.1.529 coronavirus, subsequently baptized with the Greek letter omicron by the World Health Organization (WHO).
