Due to the appearance of a new variant of the coronavirus, several countries have decided to impose restrictions or even close their borders in order to avoid a new wave of contagions. Omicron, the new mutation of the virus, was first detected by South African scientists in Botswana at the beginning of the month, although the WHO announced its appearance last Friday. Although many aspects of the variant are still unknown, the World Health Organization has indicated that Omicron “has a large number of mutations that can impact on the behavior of the virus”. Likewise, the WHO has assured that this new strain is “of concern” as it presents “a very high risk” to the world.
In response to the WHO’s warnings, several countries have begun to tighten restrictions related to the coronavirus, in addition to canceling flights with certain countries in southern Africa. The United Kingdom, France and Israel were the first to suspend direct flights to South Africa and Botswana; later, the European Union joined the measure, canceling air routes to other African countries such as Mozambique, Namibia and Zimbabwe. However, the WHO urged the international community not to discriminate against these nations.

All of them must remain in quarantine for seven days if they have symptoms or five days if they are asymptomatic: those who are not residents will stay in a hotel near the capital’s airport and those who are will have to isolate themselves in their homes.
The Omicron variant “arrived with a high probability in Germany”, warned a regional minister, after characteristic mutations were detected last night in a passenger also coming from South Africa.
“One traveler had several characteristic Omicron mutations last night. There is therefore a high level of suspicion. The person in question is in home isolation,” said Kai Klose, head of the Hessian State Department of Social Affairs.
The appearance of this variant led much of the world, including the European Union, the United States, Canada and Brazil, to suspend air traffic with countries in southern Africa, a measure which was joined by a group of Asian and Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, Thailand, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

The cascade of country restrictions began Thursday night when the United Kingdom announced it would temporarily suspend flights from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.
Singapore has opted to ban entry to all non-residents from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, while nationals and permanent residents returning from any of these countries will be required to spend 10 days at home. Malaysia has also taken similar measures.
Meanwhile, Germany plans to declare South Africa a “virus variant area” as of Friday night, which will mean that airlines will only be able to enter from the country to repatriate German nationals.
The United States will restrict travel from South Africa and seven other countries as of Monday. Following advice from Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Biden administration will restrict travel from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.
