The Council of Ministers has agreed this Tuesday to lift the restrictions on flights from the United Kingdom in force since the end of December to curb the arrival of the British variant of the coronavirus, but will maintain the measures in the same sense imposed on flights from Brazil and South Africa.
As regards South Africa and Brazil, the fourth extension of the measure adopted on February 2 has been agreed, so that the limitation will be in force until April 13.

The United Kingdom on Thursday showed concern about a newly identified coronavirus variant in South Africa that could make vaccines less effective, and imposed travel restrictions to six African countries.
Javid said more data were needed, but the travel restrictions were necessary as a precaution, as scientists said laboratory studies were needed to assess the likelihood of mutations resulting in greatly reduced vaccine efficacy.
Officials have warned the government of the need to act quickly and preemptively if concerns about the impact of the variant are confirmed, although it could take weeks to generate all the necessary information about its characteristics.

The European continent has been particularly anxious since Belgium revealed on Friday that last Monday it had detected the first case of Omicron, subtype B.1.1.529 of the Wuhan virus, which the WHO has already described as a “risk variant”. The United Kingdom today confirmed two infections on its territory, both linked to each other and connected with travel to southern Africa, and Germany another two, in Bavaria. The Netherlands is sequencing against the clock the 61 cases found on two flights from South Africa to find out how many of them belong to this new modification of the virus.
Yesterday afternoon, a team from Amsterdam’s municipal health service (GGD) went to Schiphol airport, where a flight from Johannesburg and another from Cape Town had landed, to test its 600 passengers, in application of the Dutch restriction on air traffic from southern Africa already in force for fear of the new strain. All passengers were isolated in an area of the terminal while awaiting the results of the PCR test, which became known during the afternoon and evening. The balance resulted in 61 people infected, although it is not yet known whether or not they are infected with the new variant. They are staying in a hotel in the Schiphol area under surveillance by local authorities, to comply with a quarantine of at least seven days if they have symptoms, and five days if they are asymptomatic. In the meantime, the health authorities are carrying out the relevant sequencing to see whether or not there is any of the new variant among these cases.
