South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has again demanded an end to international restrictions imposed on southern African countries following the detection of the omicron variant and called them “hypocrisy of the worst kind.”
“These countries have always told us that we should base our decisions on science, but when it is their turn to apply it to themselves they only look to their own self-interest,” Ramaphosa lamented Monday, speaking at an International Forum on Peace and Security in Dakar.
“The devastating impact that these travel bans have is well known, the UN Secretary General (António Guterres) has called it ‘travel apartheid’,” the South African leader, who is on a brief official visit to Senegal, stressed in his speech. In this sense, Ramaphosa described these drastic decisions as “hypocrisy of the worst kind” and stressed that this “must end”.
The prime minister has called for the cancellation of the same when it is not possible to wear a mask and to raise vigilance in the rest. “The idea is not to ban them, it is to respect the distance and wear the mask. But when it is not possible, they will be banned,” he said.
