Controls were established at land ports and at the airport to prevent the coronavirus from entering the country, as there is a lack of capacity to carry out adequate medical tests or treatment. So far, samples are being sent to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) in South Africa.
Flights to and from Europe, Reunion Island and Mayotte are suspended. There have been no reported cases of carriers of the virus in question, but Malagasy nationals stranded in Seychelles, in India and on Reunion Island, under medical supervision until they comply with the quarantine dictated by WHO, also for fear of not having the necessary capacities to contain it once it enters the island. They must return to the island by March 19 at the latest.
A 14-day quarantine is applied to passengers from China, Italy, South Korea, Iran, Germany and France. Stringent border controls, particularly at crossings with South Africa, are in place to keep Mozambique free of the virus.

In the press conference after the Council, the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, detailed that this is the fourth extension of the restrictions on flights and ships coming from the United Kingdom: it will be in force from 18:00 on February 16 until 18:00 on March 2, 2021 (peninsular time).
The extension of the restrictions on flights from Brazil and South Africa will come into effect at 09:00 on 17 February 2021 (peninsular time) and will be in effect until 18:00 on 2 March 2021 (peninsular time).

The U.S. government, which had decided to wait for more information before deciding whether to suspend air traffic with South Africa and other African countries, later announced that as of Monday it will impose restrictions on travelers from South Africa and seven other countries in the South: Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi.
